View Full Version : Massive traffic but severe hotlinking problems
I was wondering why my server on average this month has served about 2 gigs a day, and the answer is this place:
http://www.opendirviewer.com/
a search for my server brings shit like this up:
http://www.opendirviewer.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fzoneshot.com%2Fserver%2Fpic%2F&pagecount=25
all of my images, and when you click on them they go to a porn site. That is where gigs and gigs of my traffic is going.
What can I do here? I'm not in any problems with bandwidth restrictions (yet), so this much traffic might let me make a few bucks.
Watermark the images? Any other ideas? Will watermarking even do anything, or is there ANY way I can make a few bucks?

well yea I used to do .htaccess shit for bandwidth purposes back when this was my personal image server that was hosted in my house. I had this as my hotlink pic:
NO NEED FOR GOATSE IN WHYWORK -RMK
then my server stopped recognizing htaccess files and i never cared to figure out why, but now I moved my server online so it works again.
I was hoping to make some money off the traffic instead of just redirecting to a dirty picture, so maybe I could just redirect it to an ad or something
Did you not read my post? You won't be able to redirect the visitor since they're the ones creating the link markup, so the only way to get the visitor is to have the image entice them to type in a new url. Get a short or memorable domain and put a free ipod offer on it and use the image to tell them to go to it and see how it does.

well i saw what you posted, but there's a few issues.
1. the content is user generated (found.) If each url i have cached there just suddenly shows 25 images per page of spam, someone will hit the "report" link and I'll lose all of the traffic in 24 hours. The only way to keep the method functional would be to watermark the images. I would then need to either keep a separate directory with watermarked images to mod_rewrite to or set the server up to watermark on the fly, because i don't feel like writing a 5 minute dissertation of instructions for ipods on each image I post on dg.
a few more points coming in one moment
2. I have a URL, so I'll set up a free ipod offer on it. What I'll start doing is put an image at the head of each directory with an ad on it, because then on each directory read they will be served an ad.
That'll be a start. That way, I keep all of my traffic and each hit will serve an ad as the first image.
:P

now to get some ads up
http://www.opendirviewer.com/top100mostviewed.php
LOL at you being top viewed page
how many image loads have you gotten from this site?
335497 hits total this month, 87,000 just yesterday
it's been growing daily too. I served 4.5 gigs of files yesterday
also, freeipods.com is out because it's a U.S. only offer, and all of this traffic is coming from The Netherlands
can you get on AIM so we can talk?
nah why not just talk on here

if you do .htaccess to change the images displayed you will still be using the bandwidth for that image.
What I would do in your situation would depend on how much bandwidth I have. I wouldn't want to face additional fees for going over my bandwidth limit. If that was the case I would just rename the open directory to something else so the site pulls nothing but 404s.

made2own gets me 300 gigs a month, and i will hopefully touch nothing over 150 a month at this rate. If it gets any larger then I will start worrying.
Because it's not yet a problem, and that it's no longer slowing down my house, I thought I'd take this opportunity to try and make some money. If I did mod_rewrite on them, it would be for ads, but I'd lose all the traffic.
We'll see how this goes.

eh i guess it works, kinda wanted the convo to move faster but I guess it's alright.
I got a page with phone gangster up and awaiting my adwords thing to finalize in 10 minutes, but whats some other good ads I can put up here???

Don't rack your brain over it too much. You run the risk of them seeing you putting hotlink protection on your images and then just removing your open directory from the site.
Being the number one spot right now I am sure they would notice.

thats why I'm not doing hotlink protection.
Look what I did here.

They take everything alphabetically and serve it, so I made a pic, named it 00001something.jpg, and it gets served first. I now have an ad on their site (that you can't click on, but close enough) and hopefully i'll get some page views.
Ads are up.

I'd do a little more targeted ads. These people are browsing bizarre pics, porn, etc on the open directory site. Kind of a big step to push a caller id spoofing service, especially one that might not work in their area (Netherlands).

i was just talking with cit1, and here's where I am taking this.
1. this endeavour is completely reliant on type-in traffic, and that goes as far as I am willing to push it. It is really hard to track type-in traffic, but when i start seeing some ad clicks i'll gauge my success. If I don't have any, I'll get more aggressive.
2. seeing as I do have the #1 spot on their site, I would almost consider approaching them to make a deal. If they aren't willing then I'll just mod_rewrite all of them to ads. I'll lose the traffic, they'll lose the business, but it won't be a loss to me and I won't be using all the bandwidth.

they're not going to give you a deal mhu
they're not going to give you a deal mhu
i'm thinking not, so we'll just have to see how far i can push this pseudo-advertising while still being effective.

pwn da system
I don't think they are going to be up for much negotiation, since you are #1 on their site
Just slip a few ad images on the front page that are discrete.. If nothing flys from that, replace all the images with some crazy AFF ads, and enjoy a 10 minute spike of traffic =p
shasta you are my hero, we'll have to see how this plays out now. I'm implementing your friend's idea tomorrow.

I'm about to write this off as a total loss and just mod_rewrite all of the pictures to something.
I got absolutely no traffic to my landing page from anything over a period of 24 hours.
Someone suggested last night that I try to inject some javascript or even a redirect to the page by using corrupted image files, but their site filters that shit out apparantly.
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- Idea by: Nic Wolfe -->
<!-- This script and many more are available free online at -->
<!-- The JavaScript Source!! http://javascript.internet.com -->
<!-- Begin
function popUp(URL) {
day = new Date();
id = day.getTime();
eval("page" + id + " = window.open(URL, '" + id + "', 'toolbar=0,scrollbars=0,location=0,statusbar=0,men ubar=0,resizable=0,width=800,height=372,left = 240,top = 326');");
}
// End -->
</script>
<BODY onLoad="javascript:popUp('http://zoneshot.com/popup.html')">
<img src="http://zoneshot.com/orly.jpg">
That works on regular pages, but it doesn't do shit if embedded, at least not on their site.
This pisses the hell out of me. I've wasted two full fucking days on this horse shit and got nothing. I thought I had something going here, but as I said at first, it's just a server with a hotlinking problem.
if youre going to piss the site owners off at least do something possibly productive...
make a webcam ad using php+gd+geoipz
you could mod rewrite the images to a php script that generates an image using gd ... geoip the ips so you can print their town in huge letters at the top of the ad image that you're creating, just make it obnoxiously large to get peoples attention
something along the lines of this would be a+

gza you are the voice of reason
argent dawn bitch
yeah it was going to involve advertising of some sort, it will definitely be a gesture done while moving out the door since I'll be removed, but it's not like I'm losing anything when losing the traffic, I'll just be saving 150 gigs a month in bandwidth.

all the traffic is coming from The Netherlands, and I followed RMK's recommendation to sign up for hollandate.com and I have an account there now
so no need to geoIP, i'll just make 1 pic and redesign the landing page for zoneshot.com with hollandate.com links and pics
in that case make sure you type it in the correct language so they can actually read it

just that worksby itself, but on their site they have it wrapped in <img> and <a> tags.
It'll prolly take some experimenting, but assuming that they don't have any strip tags code in there (as they aren't expecting it because there's no user input on the site) it might just be crazy enough to work.
I have to go to work but I'll try it when I get back
k that didn't work for shit. Not even close.
