View Full Version : how do you handle backups when you have too many computers
here are the computers i have that i should probably have good backups on:
one windows server colo'd somewhere - no current active backup plan
one linux colo which ftp's backups to the other linux colo but i never remember to download them
two asterisk boxes - one in my office, one in my dad's
1 windows laptop - runs my irl biz + bookkeeping etc, 100gb drive
1 ubuntu boxen - my home hackstation, 500gb drive
i'm really piss poor about running manual backups, i know i can run bacula on the linux machines but should i just set up NAS at my office or just get a couple externals and call it a day
or get an extra colod server and use that strictly for backups?

You need a network appliance SAN. They provide you with all the softwares you need for daily backups when j00 buy the SAN www.networkappliance.com
Software you can use for Windows machine: SYMANTEC/VERITAS
Software you can use for LINUX/UNIX: RSYNC

my buddy won't shut up about his time capsule.. i'd save give it a shot
i have twelve systems running throughout my home network, I just keep a 2tb NAS running mapped under Q: on all of the machines, and every night do a scheduled task/batch job so that all of my systems copy the desired directories to my NAS storage.
net use Q: \\<SERVERNAME>\backup-for-<COMPUTERNAME>\
Just make a corresponding folder on your NAS drive. For me it would be:
\\tmbackup\backup-homecontrol for my home automation box
\\tmbackup\backup-tm-hp for my hp notebook
\\tmbackup\backup-tm-toshiba for my toshiba
I especially recommend backing up if you run several media servers for your home theater system... my last one didn't enjoy the hot enviornment of a loaded rack in a closet... computer died, i fucked up the drive on accident when I took it out to put it into another system. lost 160GB of dvds... sucks but at least I was able to use the magnet inside of the hard disk for something.

You can get 1TB external storage USB for under 300. You can get fire wire for under $500. Google it.
Then just throw up NTBackup and rsync to sync all your machines remotely.
well my big problem is the geographical distribution of them... 3 different offices
i was thinking of putting NAS in one but then the uploading from the remote stations might be way super slow

The inital backup will be slow, and monthly if you go with the standard grandfather/father/son setup, but if you just do one full backup and incremental each day, you won't notice.

mozypro.com is a nice online backup, but not enough for what you need. Good for mission critical shit though.

server not found for the url
if you meant netapp.com then i'd say theyre using generic hardware

most NAS devices for consumers are slow as fuck so i'd avoid them
build yourself a hardware (not software) raid 5 rackmount
no need for a rackmount i have plenty of physical space

id go with a huge NAS running in raid 1 just to make sure, the throw those backup jobs in the cron or whatever doze uses.
reason being u don't got another headache to worry about by doing backups so they might actually get done also no headache

k but rackmounts look more elite and are cooler and work best with oracle or sco databases
