I don't read or watch any MSM as a source of news-gathering. Of the news I do pursue, I'd estimate that less than 20% has its origins in the MSM. So explain to me how you arrived at the conclusion that I'm a slave to the "MSM trap." I largely agree with this. I just think that without the early establishment of those norms, what Marx wrote about the capitalist-laborer relationship would have been a bit closer to the mark. Perhaps there is no utility for unionized labor anymore.

I find it funny that a lot of disagreement, political or economical or otherwise, seems to boil down to a difference in faith in the nature of humanity. It's just strange that what appears to be so complex can be boiled down to something so elemental.

im not in a union, but ive worked for a construction company on the project management/supervision side

i cant speak for all unions, but when it comes to ironworkers, plumbers and carpenters, the quality of work is much higher with unions than non-unions

not sure about the other unions, but the ironworkers, plumbers and carpenters (even though they are all primadonnas) are worth the extra money because you have less rework

the union apprenticeship program is excellent and produces quality workers. the shitheads get fired real quick (especially in this economy, where the union halls are full of guys ready to come take their place)

hate all you want, but in construction, unions are worth the premium. they know how to meet a schedule and deliver quality (and save money in the long run)

I just built a site for a big union "local."
It pained me to do business with those types, but fuck it - I love money more than I hate them.
That shit is definitely built around the union politicians assraping the guys on the bottom who do all the work.
The president of this "local" makes over 400k+ a year, which is a pretty penny considering he is only top level of a single "local" which is a very, very small part of the union as a whole.
Where does all of that money come from, besides the union dues all of the smaller guys pay?
They negotiate contracts where motherfuckers that have been working the same job for 30 years are only making 16 bucks an hour.
Sure, there are probably great unions to work for, but I don't think they are as common as the corrupt ones.
The guys running the unions are definitely crooks.
I just feel bad for all of the guys who have dumped their lives into companies and barely get SHIT for it. These motherfuckers are unioned up repping that shit hard with hoodies and t-shirts and everything without realizing they have been getting fucked for 3 decades.

Unions are a GREAT idea in theory, and have been GREAT throughout history which nobody can deny. I definitely feel that they are obsolete going into 2010, though.
