    Question VNC Client for W7?

I am looking for a VNC thingy that's relatively easy to set up. All PC's are running Windows 7 Home Premium or above. The server is brand new, and sitting on a DSL connection at one guys house. I have 3 other users who need to get into the machine over the Internet.

I don't know why I have forgotten how to do this, must have been the 3-4 year party period...lol

I tried TightVNC and was able to connect to the server over the LAN, but I can't seem to hit it over the Internet.

Any easier clients out there or decent tuts to detail how to do all of this?

    Thanks,
    Bill

I would really suggest just using RDP, it's easier and more secure than VNC.

Right click on mycomputer - properties - advanced sys settings - remote tab - enable it

then just go start- search - remote desktop

    use that

Also, if you have a server, run a TS gateway + IIS. You can configure secure remote access that way. User logs in, they select the computer they want to acccess, and are routed to it. You don't have to fuck with multiple ports that way. You also have the VPN option, actually several VPN options. If you're running exclusively Windows 7/Vista/2008, look into SSTP VPNs. It tunnels through an SSL connection with the server preventing most direct credential and keystream attacks through SSL; credentials and authentication takes place post tunnel. L2TP/IPSec offers the same credentials after encrypted tunnel advantage, but it is more complicated on the network side, and has a slightly higher load per connection. The upside is that every modern operating system and router should support L2TP/IPSec passthroughs. On a related note, if you have people connecting from "restricted" networks where ports may be blocked, SSTP always works, since it uses the standard HTTPS port(s).

Depending on the ISP, you may need a business grade line before incoming connections on certain ports are allowed. The most common port blocks are limited to 80 (http) and 25 (smtp), but there are many exceptions. You may also encounter outbound blocks. I have had a shitton of trouble with ISPs blocking outbound SMTP traffic that is not run through their mail servers.

EDIT: I should add, the big advantage to using VNC instead of RDP is that it allows direct interaction with the console session. RDP only allows this in certain situations and it can be a pain to configure. You may also want to look into DameWare for a more robust solution.

RDP is only available on W7 Professional or something like that, not on any of the Home editions, already tried that.

Yeah, that's the issue I am struggling with. I have to open 5800 and 5900, and I have done that process like 10 times now on the server machine, and using 3 different port scanning tools I can't see the open ports. When I try to hit the IP from my phone (using a VNC App.) I get failure to connect...

    Two possibilities:
    1. You fucked up forwarding on the router.
    2. Your modem is blocking things.

Use nmap to scan your ip address from an external connection, try scanning for just the ports you are trying to forward. Or try connecting with netcat.

Before I had a dd-wrt router i had some old pos netgear router that no matter how hard i tried and confirmed the correct settings, simply would not forward ports.

Long story short if you having port problems i feel bad for you son i got 99 problems but my router aint one.

    get/flash a dd-wrt shit is a world of a difference
