Police: Car loaded with illegal fireworks a `rolling bomb'

A car stop by Oakland police yielded more than a quarter-ton of illegal commercial grade fireworks - 150 pounds in the vehicle's trunk and another 400 pounds at the driver's home in Hayward, investigators said Tuesday.

Oakland Sgt. Barry Donelan called the suspect's car "a rolling bomb" since among the devices in the trunk were 26 M100 cherry bombs that each contained powder equal to a quarter-stick of dynamite.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called to remove the fireworks.

More than 6,000 pounds of illegal fireworks were found in a home in Watts, authorities said Monday.


Two people were arrested, but their names were not released. They could face possible charges of possession and distribution of illegal fireworks.
