Not effectively, unless you know which server(s) are acting as C&C for the net, and even then it is difficult to do. If you could knock those offline, it would have a mitigating effect, but would not immediately stop the attack. The effectiveness of wasting the C&C server(s) will depend on the coding of the bot. If you are going to shut down a net by returning fire on the controllers, you have to get all of the controllers. Most (good) bots have quite a bit of server redundancy built in. Controllers can be switched quickly, so you would have to stay on top of the DNS records, and re-point your attack in the event that controllers are switched. The botmaster could always execute a remote update and abandon the domains/IPs you thought to be controlling the net, at which point you would have to start over. The botmaster could always switch his DNS to a selective-response server, and keep every IP not tied to a confirmed, non-compromised bot from even resolving the controllers while they are under attack or investigation.



Of course, a few well-placed emails would (temporarily) take the net down if you knew all of the controllers, but that would be a bitch ass anti move.
