The justices in January accepted the Safford school district case for review, and will decide whether a campus setting gives school administrators greater discretion to control students suspected of illegal activity than police are allowed in cases involving adults in general public spaces.

The case is centered around Savana Redding, now 19, who in 2003 was an eighth-grade honors student at Safford Middle School, about 127 miles from Tucson, Arizona. Redding was strip-searched by school officials after a fellow student accused her of providing prescription-strength ibuprofen pills.

The school has a zero-tolerance policy for all prescription and over-the-counter medication, including the ibuprofen, without prior written permission.

Actually no they can not. There is a whole different set of laws regarding how children are handled. In this case they could only have legally had her wait in the office until her parent or legal guardian showed up to take care of the matter. Also, they are required to contact the parent or legal guardian for anything short of immediate life saving medical need.

The schools vice principal fucked up and then the two female staff who conducted the search compounded the error by also fucking up. Someone should have opened their yap and stopped the whole thing in its tracks before it ever got that far.

Why a vice principal thought that he could make this decision is beyond me.

We have this tendency to believe we "know" what America stands for, because we learned about our values in school or something and we get all up in arms when we read something that doesn't seem to fit. I'm pretty sure this is also dependant on where you live. I'm pretty sure that in my former high school, there doesn't exist a teacher who would go so far as to strip search a child. They aren't that stupid. However a kid did almost get charged with inciting a riot, by participating in a food fight... so who knows.
